Jacob Higgins is a limited liability partner at Wisener Nunnally Higgins, LLP. He received his undergraduate degree in 2009 from Texas State University, graduating magna cum laude. He received his Juris Doctorate in 2012 from SMU Dedman School of Law, where he graduated cum laude, earned the Dean’s List award, and was Associate Managing Editor for the International Law Review Association. During law school, he also interned with a federal district judge, a state district judge in Collin County, and the United States Attorney’s Office.
Jacob received his license to practice law in the State of Texas in 2012. He is the past president of the Garland Bar Association and is a member of the Dallas Bar Association and the Collin County Bar Association.
Jacob has a civil practice that includes a wide variety of litigation and transactional matters. Since 2012, Jacob’s practice has included a strong emphasis on family law cases, including divorces, custody and parentage disputes, and enforcement actions. He has extensive experience resolving disputes, both in the courtroom and by agreement. Jacob applies a cost-benefit analysis to family-law disputes, helping his clients weigh the expected cost to achieve a specific objective against the expected benefit to the client of achieving that objective. Jacob believes that most disputes can be resolved by agreement, which is usually much less expensive and stressful than contested litigation. When an agreement is not possible or feasible, however, Jacob provides sophisticated, deliberate, and aggressive representation in the courtroom.
Jacob’s practice also includes estate planning and probate. His estate-planning practice is centered on ensuring that the client’s property is distributed to the people the client wants to receive it and on making the probate process as easy as possible for the client’s loved ones. His probate practice includes contested and uncontested estate administration, disputes over the existence and meaning of wills, disputes over capacity, and minor and adult guardianships.
Jacob’s practice also includes representing landlords and tenants in lease disputes and forcible entry and detainer (commonly known as eviction) cases.
Jacob understands that hiring an attorney, whether to handle contested litigation or to draft transactional documents, can be a stressful and expensive experience. Each client has different needs and wishes. Jacob seeks to guide his clients through the most effective and affordable options, while ultimately allowing the client to decide the best path for the client. Jacob strives to achieve his client’s objectives with an affordable, sophisticated, and client-centered approach.
Jacob enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. They enjoy visiting family in Austin, camping, and family game nights.
